Palak Bonda (Spinach Pakora) Recipe

Cooking is one of my passions. I like to make simple, nutritious, and tasty foods at home.

Palak bonda (spinach pakora)

Easy, Tasty, and Healthy Snack

Palak bonda (spinach pakora) is made with spinach, chickpea flour, rice flour, onions, herbs, and spices. Crunchy and colorful, it has a wonderful flavor and is nutritious, too.

Spinach is a good source of vitamins, iron, calcium, folates, and minerals. Chickpea flour is rich in protein, vitamins, and fiber. It is a superfood in itself. Other ingredients like onions, ginger-garlic paste, herbs, and spices also add nutrients to this snack.

Once the ingredients are prepared, it takes only five to 10 minutes to make this snack. Children love palak bonda, too, because it is bite-sized and yummy. Serve it hot with tomato sauce for a satisfying evening snack or a fun party appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups spinach (palak), washed, chopped lengthwise
  • 1 cup chickpea flour (besan)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons rice flour
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste or grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon curry leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped lengthwise
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (hing) powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon cooking soda (baking soda)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Oil for deep-frying

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, add chickpea flour, rice flour, chopped spinach, red chili powder, ginger-garlic paste, chopped curry leaves, chopped onions, green chilies, asafoetida, cumin seeds, cooking soda, and salt. In simple words, add all the ingredients except "oil for deep-frying" to a mixing bowl. Mix well.
  2. Sprinkle a very small amount of water and make a loose and pliable dough, as shown in the image.
  3. Make lemon-sized balls out of the dough. Place the balls on a plate.
  4. Now, you have to fry these balls. For that, heat the oil for deep-frying. When the oil becomes medium hot, slide a few balls into the hot oil. Don't overcrowd them. Keep the heat at medium-high at the beginning of frying.
  5. Once the balls are half-cooked and firm on the outside, reduce the heat. Occasionally turn them to ensure uniform cooking on all sides. Continue to cook until the balls become golden brown and crunchy. Frying a batch may take about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Remove them with a slotted spatula and place them on an absorbent paper towel. The paper towel absorbs the excess oil from the pakoras.
  7. Repeat the same process with the remaining dough to make more pakoras.
  8. Your favorite colorful and scrumptious palak bonda (spinach pakora) are ready! Serve them hot with tomato sauce.
  9. Eat spinach pakoras as evening snacks, tea-time snacks, or appetizers! Enjoy the crunchiness and taste!
