What Is Cold Brew?

Cold brew refers to the process of preparing the coffee—not the temperature of the final result. There are plenty of methods for making cold brew. Generally, it begins with scooping out the ground coffee into a cold brew coffee maker (or jar or pot), and then adding room temperature water and letting it soak for a while, usually 12 hours or more. When I make cold brew at home, I put the jar in the fridge overnight. The next day you will get a super-smooth, less acidic, and highly caffeinated coffee. Usually, I wait for 24 hours before I enjoy the cold brew. Trust me. It's worth it!

So, what are you waiting for? Let's make cold brew coffee now!

Ingredients

  • 110 grams freshly roasted coffee beans
  • Filtered water, room temperature
  • Ice cubes
  • Sugar or sweetener (optional)

Necessary Equipment: Cold brew coffee maker, complete with a filter for the grounds

Directions

  1. Weigh 110 grams of freshly roasted coffee beans.
  2. Grind the coffee beans to a coarse or medium-coarse grind.
  3. Add 110 grams grounds to the filter, approximately 5/6 of the filter.
  4. Carefully pour room temperature filtered water over the grounds, filling to the max line. Stir to begin the process.
  5. Allow the coffee to brew in the fridge for 12-18 hours, depending on your preference. Stir occasionally to bring out the best flavors.
  6. Once the coffee is to your preference (I waited 24 hours), stop brewing by removing the filter and the grounds.
  7. Put the lid back for an airtight seal. The cold brew concentrate can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
  8. To serve: Take your favorite cup or Mason jar and add some ice cubes. Pour the cold brew concentrate into the glass. You can mix cold brew concentrate with sugar, water, or milk to create your perfect cup of joy!

Rachelle, the process of making cold brew coffee is like a science school project. I love it! The store-bought one is pretty good too. I have a few that I like. However, homemade cold brew is the best! Thank you for commenting.

Wow! I didn't know so much goes into making cold brew coffee. Your inviting images didn't exactly make me want to make cold brew...because I'm far too lazy for this, but they DID make me want to go out and buy one! LOL! Thank you so much for sharing...

Hey Liza,

Thank you so much for this cold brew coffee recipe.

I am crazy about cold coffee. If I have to choose between a cold brew coffee and iced tea, I will always choose "The Cold Brew Coffee". I love it a lot!
