How to Grind Millet to Make Millet Rava and Millet Dalia
Rajan loves cooking dishes from his native Indian cuisine. He likes to share his favourite recipes with his online readers.
Rava and dalia are two products used to prepare Indian dishes like porridge, dalia, idli, dosa, vada and more. Rice and wheat are used wherever appropriate to prepare these dishes.
Usually, wheat is used to prepare rava, which is a fine-grained product. Dalia is prepared with broken wheat.
Millets work both like wheat and rice, in that they can be ground to a flour or cooked like rice. You can buy ready-made rava and dalia from the market, but they can be expensive and sometimes have added chemicals that nullify their health benefits.
Here is a simple method to prepare rava and dalia from millets. We have used browntop millet as an example but you can use any Siridhanya millet of your choice.

Cook Time
Prep time | Cook time | Ready in | Yields |
---|---|---|---|
3 min | 7 min | 10 min | 4 servings |
Ingredients
- 1 cup browntop millet (or any Siridhanya millet)
Instructions
- Put the millet in a grinder jar and grind it on pulse mode.
- Pulse the millet 5-6 times, giving a 1-2 second pulse each time.
- Sieve the ground mixture and separate it into a very finely ground rava and a coarser broken millet (dalia).
- The rava and dalia can be stored in an airtight jar and used within a couple of days or prepared fresh and used immediately as per your convenience.
- If you would like to store these for a longer period, dry-roast the millet for 2-3 minutes on low heat until it becomes aromatic. Let it cool down completely before grinding it as explained in the steps above.
