What Is National Sugar Cookie Day?

National Sugar Cookie Day is celebrated on July 9th by bakeries, cookie shops, and home bakers across the United States. To celebrate this day, I'd like to share some of my tips and photos to help you bake these yummy treats!

In my baking experience, sugar cookies are one of the easiest types of cookies to make. The recipe requires only very basic ingredients—butter, flour, vanilla essence, sugar, and baking soda—and the cookies taste great plain or decorated.

A Brief History of the Sugar Cookie

As we all know, sugar cookies are an addictive holiday essential that comes in all shapes and sizes and are typically topped with colored icing. The sugar cookie history is believed to have originated in the mid-1700s in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. German Protestant settlers created a round, crumbly, and buttery cookie that came to be known as the Nazareth Cookie.

How to Shape and Bake the Cookie

To shape the cookies, you can use a cookie-cutter, cookie press, knife, or piping bag. The cookies take about 10-12 minutes to bake. After the cookies come out of the oven, you will notice that they are softer in the middle, but after you set them out on a wire rack to cool, they will harden within a few minutes. Later, if you like, you can decorate the cookies by just piping icing on top.

Let's make sugar cookies!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Frosting Ingredients

  • 3 cups icing sugar
  • 5 tablespoons water (add more if the glaze is very thick)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or grease the baking sheet).
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the butter and sugar. Use a hand mixer to beat the ingredients until they are well combined.
  4. Add the egg yolk, baking soda, vanilla extract, and salt into the butter mixture. Continue mixing until combined.
  5. Gradually add the flour into the wet mixture. Mix until it's well combined.
  6. Take out the dough and roll out to your preferred thickness. Use a cookie cutter, cookie press, knife, or piping bag to shape the cookies.
  7. Place the cookies onto the parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges of cookies are turning golden brown.
  9. Transfer the cookies onto a wire rack to let cool completely before decorating.
  10. Glaze icing: Combine the icing sugar with water in a bowl. Add food coloring of your choice. Mix until it's well combined.
  11. Decorate the cooled cookies with glaze icing.
  12. Store in an airtight container for up to one week.

I really liked your idea of adding food coloring to the sugar coating.

Thank you for the idea, Liza!
