Birthday Cake Made Out of French Toast
For my husband's birthday, I decided to make something other than a traditional cake. Since he loves French toast, I was inspired to make a tower of French toast—and he loved it! To make it even more special, I used a loaf of homemade bread that I'd baked a day earlier.
How Is French Toast Made?
Everyone makes French toast a little differently. Generally, it is made by soaking bread in eggs and milk then frying it in a pan. Beyond this basic formula, however, everyone has their own personal preference when it comes to what other ingredients are included in the perfect recipe.
Recently, I've been using ghee oil rather than butter to fry the bread—the resulting French toast is very crispy. Ghee is a class of clarified butter that originated in ancient India. If you don't have ghee or prefer not to use it, butter works just fine.
The French Toast Is Scrumptious!
My husband was delighted with his French toast birthday "cake." I added a very generous layer of sliced bananas between each slice of toast, and I topped it with fresh blackberries and raspberries. To finish, I sprinkled powdered sugar and then drizzled maple syrup. Voila! My husband said he was happy with a special birthday treat and said the French toast was delicious!
Try making this for yourself or a loved one at home. It could be for a birthday or any special occasion.
Ingredients
- 4 to 5 slices bread (I used homemade white bread, but any type of bread you have at home will do)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 5 tablespoons whole milk
- 3 tablespoons ghee (I used ghee with vanilla bean)
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- Maple syrup, honey, or other syrup
- Fresh fruits (bananas, blackberries, raspberries, etc.) or fruit compote (optional)
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Directions
- In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon powder. Stir until a smooth batter forms.
- Heat the ghee and olive oil on medium heat in a pan.
- Take the first slice of bread and dip one side of it in the batter thinly. Do not dip the whole slice into the batter, as this will make the toast soggy. Dip the other side with the same technique.
- Put the coated bread in the pan. Cook both sides until they turn golden brown, then remove.
- Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top.
- Top with fresh, thinly sliced fruit or fruit compote.
- Drizzle with maple syrup, honey, or syrup of your choice.
- Enjoy!
How to keep the French toast warm before serving: Heat the oven to 190°F. After cooking the first batch, place the French toast on foil or a pan and let it sit in the oven. Continue doing this until you have finished making all of the French toast.
