What Is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day?

National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is celebrated on August 4th by cookie shops, bakeries, and home bakers across the United States. Did you know the chocolate chip cookie is America's most popular cookie? To celebrate this day, I'd like to share a bit of history about this famous cookie, as well as my favorite recipe.

A Brief History of the Chocolate Chip Cookie

The chocolate chip cookie is one of the most popular cookies in the world—but who created them? Well, the story begins around 1938 with Ruth Graves Wakefield, an American chef who invented the Toll House Cookie, which was the first chocolate chip cookie. I found her story while looking through some of my cookbooks at home over the weekend. So it's thanks to Wakefield that we can enjoy these delicious cookies today.

How to Celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

  • Bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies at home with family.
  • Share some of your cookies with friends. Make up a few gift packages or invite good friends for a cookie party.
  • Take a picture of the chocolate chip cookie you make and post it on social media with the hashtag #nationalchocolatechipcookieday
  • Bakers are always giving out free samples. Check with your local cafés and bakeries to see if they are offering free or discounted chocolate chip cookie celebration of the holiday.
  • Enjoy it with a cup of your favorite coffee, tea, or a glass of milk.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts or almond (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or grease the baking sheet).
  3. In a small bowl, sieve the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, butter, dark brown sugar, vanilla, milk, and egg. Use a hand mixer to beat the ingredients until they are well combined.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture into the wet mixture. Continue mixing at a lower speed, but do not over-mix.
  6. Add the corn syrup and continue mixing for a few seconds.
  7. Add the chocolate chips and chopped walnut or almond into the mixture. Use a spatula to incorporate the ingredients.
  8. Use an ice-cream scoop or a spoon to drop the cookies onto the pan.
  9. Bake the cookies for 12 minutes.
  10. Transfer the cookies onto a wire rack and let them cool completely before putting them into a jar.
  11. Enjoy the cookies with a coffee, tea, or milk!

Crispy vs. Chewy

I like my cookies crispy, and one of the ways I achieve that is by combining white granulated sugar with dark brown sugar. However, you're welcome to adjust the balance of white vs. dark sugar, per your preference.

Make sure to keep the cookies inside an airtight container in order to preserve the crispiness. By the way, if you prefer your cookies to be chewy or soft, all you have to do is shape thicker cookies on the pan and then bake them in under 15 minutes. I hope you and your family will enjoy them as much as we do!

Correct! Whenever I make the chocolate chip cookie, I'll make sure to prepare two batches of dough. I bake the first batch and save the remaining dough in the freezer. The trick is to have fresh chocolate chip cookies without having to pull out the mixer, the bowl, and the ingredients. Thank you for commenting, Sp Greaney.

You're welcome, Peggy. My husband loves eating cookies too. He requested peanut butter cookies after I baked chocolate chip cookies. Usually, he brings the cookies to work so he can share it with his colleagues. By the way, I bet your grandmother's oatmeal cookies recipe is delicious! Please share the recipe, Peggy.
